In March of 1998 the SHTA change its name to St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association enabling the SHTA to became a representative of the total private sector, instead of just a hotel association. The slogan “Tourism is Everybody’s Business” was introduced. The SHTA broadens its scope to include the trade sector of St. Maarten.
The Association’s goal is to also offer its benefits to other sectors that rely on the hospitality sector, due to the island’s large dependence on tourism. The change was also reflected in the new name: The St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association. This widened scope was also reflected in the addition of two more disciplines to the board, including Restaurant and Marine Trades directors.
